Why I Belong to the American Legion

As this writer completes another set of stories about our Post’s activities in Chapel Hill, I am reminded of the value of an active, vibrant post in our community. No, not just in our community, but in towns, villages, cities and counties throughout our nation. Have you ever asked yourself, “What would our town be like without an American Legion post?” “Do we make a difference?” For us, I need only point to our recent successes with youth. Our youth are our future.

Celebrating the 4th in Rural America

Many of our post members join other veterans in Caldwell, NC, for their July 4th Parade. This is truly small town America at its best. There are old time cars, a vintage plane flyover, manure spreaders, horses, patriotic floats, kids on colorful bikes, and much more. It is Caldwell’s annual salute to veterans and those who are serving today around the world. Why not get on the road and experience what makes North Carolina different.

D-Day Observance – June 18th

D-DAY ANNIVERSARY OBSERVED – World War II veteran Mark Sumner of Chapel Hill will be honored at a special ceremony marking the June 6, 1944 Anniversary of the allied invasion of Normandy. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star and the Legion of Honor Medal, France’s highest military honor awarded for his valor and bravery while serving in France. Mr. Mark R. Sumner is also Director Emeritus, Institute of Outdoor Drama, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
