Passing of Yolanda Heavlin

It is with deep regret that we share with Post members the passing of Elvia Yolanda “Yoli” Heavlin on Wednesday, March 30th, 2022, after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Yolanda was a member of the Post 6 Auxiliary and is the spouse of Past Post Commander Lee Heavlin. Commander Heavlin shared the sad news with us and has provided today the funeral arrangements.

Commander Heavlin wrote, “Past Post Adjutant Robert Patton relished sharing his pride and thanks for the dedication to Post 6 and combined services of the Heavlin Family. He would say, ‘When Lee Heavlin stepped forward to volunteer, you did not just get him, you got the whole family coming to help.’ “

“I was able to serve these past 30 years in many veterans’ groups, programs, and projects because of my wife. She not only vigorously supported my volunteerism but worked right alongside of me. She then added her own personal service to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Orange County Veterans Memorial, and our church. At Chapel Hill Post 6 she cleaned, prepared meals, decorated for meetings and special events, repaired and painted Post 6, restored the grounds, championed projects, served in the several Auxiliaries, and so much more. By example, she encouraged others to join her and that included all members of our family.”

Yolanda is also the proud mother of Jorge Heavlin, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and then the North Carolina Air National Guard. Jorge saw service in Afghanistan and is a member of American Legion Post No. 6.

The Heavlin family will welcome friends of the family to a Wake Service on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hall-Wynne Funeral Home at 1113 West Main Street, Durham, NC 27701.
