The Veterans Memorial Committee presented their concept design plan to the Orange County Commissioners tonight.  Committee Co-Chairman Jim Merritt introduced David Swanson, the memorial’s design lead, and the preliminary design was then shared with the commissioners.

This action, the acceptance of the design concept, marks the beginning of the formal fundraising for the memorial.  The dedication of the memorial site is now set for Veterans day on the 98th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I.  The ceremony will be at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (November 11th).  Planning for that special ceremony starts now.

Before the Orange County Commissioners Meeting, commissioners, veterans, and Veterans Committee members met for a walk-through of the memorial site near the Orange County Southern Human Services Center off Homestead Road.  The memorial is on one acre of a roughly eight acre nature area under a canopy of ancient trees.  The design team took photographs of the Homestead Site and overlaid the veterans memorial so that everyone could visualize the memorial using the existing forested area.
